How can multi-vector microgrids enable faster grid connections whilst reducing pressure on the grid and accelerate electrification of C&I sites?
Project VOLT is a Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) project led by Northern Powergrid and delivered with LCP Delta, Newcastle University, EDF Energy UK, Northern Gas Networks and Wales & West Utilities.
The project is looking at how multi-vector microgrids could support network operators and the electrification of C&I sites. By bringing together local generation, storage and grid connections, they could enable faster connections for sites looking to electrify, while helping network operators manage the changing demands placed on the electricity network.
These microgrids also provide a new source of flexibility for electricity networks, creating benefits for both C&I customers and network operators. These include helping to manage demand, improve local resilience and support voltage management.

- How much flexibility hybrid microgrids will offer and where that value could sit for C&I customers and network operators.
- How they could help ease pressure on the grid by deferring some network investment and reinforcement.
